“Il futuro è la nostra missione – The future is our mission” is the thought that accompanies the action of Don Bosco missionaries. In the long thread that connects the Salesian presence in 136 countries, we have identified two projects in two countries that are particularly fragile at this time: Ukraine and Nigeria.

We know how complex the war situation in Ukraine is, but the news that reaches us leaves aside the description of their everyday life.
Those who pay the highest price are the minors, the most sensitive antennas for terror. Lviv is the city-refuge for the entire country, and it is here that the Salesians have strengthened the reception center for orphaned children and young people in difficult family situations, with both psychological and physical problems, often serious, arising from this state of war. The help program for the youngest has been enriched with the Savio Center: the youth center of the Pokrova Parish has become an essential point of reference for many families.

Nigeria is experiencing a rapid and unequal development, determining a new economy made of speculation, corruption and social degradation. The main victims are minors, left to grow up without the support of adults, in the most disadvantaged cases: the phenomenon of “street boys and girls” ensues. It is estimated that one in ten minors finds themselves in this living condition, gathering in small groups to try to get food and shelter. In Lagos, the Salesians have created the Bosco Boys Home, a home for street children who want to change their lives.
With a team of social workers and educators, the missionaries guarantee them food, health care, psychological and social support.

Nigeria and Ukraine are only two of the many nations where today the youngest are exposed to deprivation and violence. The Salesians are at their service. May Christmas make us more sensitive towards helping them on these frontiers
