The 21st edition of the Christmas Concert was in support of the charity project of the Don Bosco in the World foundation, “A drop for life” which aims at facilitating access to drinking water and constructing sanitation facilities in some of the villages of the Kandi region, in Benin (West Africa)
From the 20th to the 30th of December 2013 it was possible to support the project by sending 2 Euros with an SMS from a personal cell phone: TIM, Vodafone, WIND, 3, PosteMobile, CoopVoce, Tiscali and Noverca, or by calling the number 45508 via landline: Telecom Italia, Infostrada, Fastweb, Tiscali, and from the fixed network TWT.
The project focuses on the recognition of the right to water, which is an inalienable right of every human being, as underlined by various norms of international law, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The specific mission of the project is to improve living conditions of the populations of 4 villages: Banikani, Fafa, Pede and Thuy.
This will be verified through two specific indicators: the percentage of people who have access to drinking water and to public toilets, and the percentage of children with dysentery, which is the main cause of infant mortality. The project would reach its target if within a year of time at least 25% of the population of each village would have access to drinking water and if the children suffering from dysentery would have decreased by 50%.
The activities will be structured within two areas of action. The first involves the construction of wells in villages, and the creation of a public committee for water management. The second involves the construction of public toilets and the training of 8 sanitation educators to disseminate among the population, the correct use of the latrines and the fundamental rules of hygiene.
A Stream of drinking water can be worth a child’s life. Let’s preserve its future.
